OLD FORT GRIFFIN MEMORIAL REGIMENT
|
THE REGIMENT
The Regiment was organized in 1991 by several historians with an interest in reenacting
the 4th U.S. Cavalry primarily as it relates to Old Fort Griffin and the Texas frontier
of the 1870's. As time and activity went on, additional historical impressions and
time periods have been added, but Fort Griffin remains our home base, our organizational
foundation and our home.
These newer impressions include Col. Tom Green's 5th Regt. Texas Mounted Vols. (cavalry)
as well as Abat-Dashnell's, Capital Guards, Valverde and West Batteries (artillery) of the
1860's Civil War Period; Col. Albert Sidney Johnston's (& Lt. Col. R. E. Lee's) 2nd U.S.
Cavalry at Camp Cooper, TX. of the 1850's era; and the 11th U.S. Infantry & 3rd U.S.
Artillery of the 1870's period at Fort Griffin.
OFGMR members are volunteers and participate according to their own priorities. The Regiment
has several Companies (local area groups) organized so a member can be active locally as well
as have opportunities to reenact in statewide, regional and national events. While there are
no activity requirements to maintain a membership, the Regiment has a variety of programs
designed to reward members for enthusiastic participation including a Service Stripe Award
program, promotions within the ranks and others. All of these opportunities are described in
the Members Handbook.
What is expected of members is that they have an interest in accurately portraying the life
and times of the soldier in camp, in garrison and in the field. Members study uniforms,
equipment, actions, drill, manners of speech and battles of the era. The goal is to be
prepared to participate in living history events, battle reenactments, tactical rides &
marches, drills and community programs and to look and act as if they came right out of the
pages of history.
A member is certainly welcome to determine the quantity of their participation as well the
various impressions and historic eras that interest them according to personal priorities.
Many of our members have wives and families participating in reenacting and the Regiment
has a very active Garrison Ladies organization as well. Info on the ladies activities is
available by contacting the H.Q. or Fort Griffin.
Although the focus of the Regiment is living history and battle reenacting for the benefit
of the public, many of our members have participated in a number of historical feature
movies and documentaries and the Regiment plans to continue such participation in the
future. Expenses and daily wages are often paid. All Members are eligible and will be
contacted when these opportunities arise.
A 28-page full color Handbook is available to members of the Old Fort Griffin Memorial
Regiment as a guide to the many aspects, guidelines, impressions and services of the
organization. Its chapters describe how we are organized, how we do business, our impressions,
necessary uniforms and equipment, and guidance on where to acquire them. It even provides
suggestions for conducting individual research. Much of the information in this website
is reprinted from the handbook.
